When I was five

Cars were 6-volt and had expansive bench seats which smelled of jute and vinyl.

They also had windshield wipers which operated on engine manifold vacuum. Because of engine dynamics, they ran painfully slow going up a hill but ran like a dream going down.

I miss the little triangle vent windows and dimmer switches on the floorboard but I don't miss when my parents would both smoke Lark or Viceroy cigarettes in front. When we complained, they would simply toss us a stick of DoubleMint Gum as an appeasement. It didn't work and I still don't like DoubleMint for that reason (even if it does have a nifty tire-tread pattern on the stick).
