Vernonia Altissima

Out in the pasture, the afternoon sun pours
graciously into the valley below the cemetery
where cattle spend long solemn days
- ruminating grass and certain paths of fate
The field grass here is cropped indifferently
yet the purple beauty of ironweed towers
and reigns over a field of dry cow pies
In the run, the minnies school together
learning to taunt every water-skeeter
as the blackened turkey vultures hunt
