Newsprint Now Gone

Main Street, St. Clairsville, Ohio, 1929

In my hometown, along Main Street, there used to be a newsstand. As with most of these sorts of media outlets, it has been closed for years. When I first consider it, I initially think, "I'd like it back again" -- with the smell of newsprint and comic books, small metal containers of Bayer Aspirin and Anacin, the candy, lighter fluid and Zippo Lighters, pipe cleaners, tobacco, and even the sight of my dad walking out of the door as we watched from the car knowing that if the magazine was rolled that it was probably the latest issue of Playboy.

Really though, I don't want it back, because it wouldn't be nearly the same -- at least not as sweetly as memory contains it. Change is sometimes hard, but I am lucky to have had all those places, events and people that are now gone.
