When I was young, I kept looking for fair

Is it fair that horrible things happen to wonderful people? I don't know.

Suffering is an inevitable quality of life and one of the most amazing things to me is that some of the happiest people I've ever known have not always had the easiest lives. I sat with an older patient several month ago. She had bladder cancer, leukemia, and had recently gone through a leg amputation. She was terminally ill.

She said something to me like, "Honey, I have had a very good life and nothing will or can ever change that."

Is it Fair?

From about ten years ago:

All Leaves

If I were the accountant of rights and wrongs
surely I might add them all up and try to find
the measure of credit to which I could balance
each emotional debit in my register

I'd be a mighty-fine accountant...

But the more I count these, the less I grow
and all the keeping track and perfect tote serves
as it would to gather All Leaves in Autumn for what
account and purpose Winter would not care or know

Say life's not fair as much as you care
but it is always a choice in our perception to make
to lay stake and claim to what we imagine is ours
But maybe then, we aren't looking - as deep as we dare
