Serious Work

When we were small, we played together in the stream. I remember laughing as we splashed and threw handful after handful of wet pebbles all over each other in the afternoon sun. It was the most important thing in the world. Now that we are old, you hold my arm as I shuffle my feet and even your sure-footed step is steadied by a cane. We've passed this run for decades, along with uncounted lives, coal trains and cattle. Even now, I want to sit in the water with you and if I were able to choose a place to leave this world, it would be right here with you.

"Play is often talked about as if it were a relief from serious learning. But for children play is serious learning. Play is really the work of childhood."
