The Gesture that Outlives the Item

This morning, my lunch bag fell to the ground as I fumbled to get into my car and the apple fell out in the darkness and rolled someplace where I could not see it. I looked for a while, and then sadly resigned myself to its loss. It isn't so much the apple, but more the wrapping that makes it precious. So I hope a hungry groundhog (Clarence), raccoon or deer finds it and then we could all be heroes -- for just one day.
