As when tires were bias-ply and vent windows were small triangles

I stopped at a gas station today and someone was filling their tires with one of those put-a-quarter-in-the-slot loose-paneled buzz boxes. They are typically in the shape of a cube, have a tangly hose and seem to take forever.

So is it really better marketing to charge for air or is it better to attract customers with free air?

The Eco air system meters seemed so wonderful and I don't think it is simply my own nostalgia that is making sense here.

If I didn't have a great compressor with an excellent Milton air chuck at home, I would certainly go out of my way to a store/station that had one of these:

* * *

When I see a plain rubber bungee on the road, my first notion is to stop and get it - even though I probably would never use it. My second thought is to wonder if an S-hook will puncture a tire.
