What ends, doesn't really

I rode past a grassy meadow yesterday on my bike and the red-winged blackbirds were talking. They have so many wonderfully distinct calls and sounds. Some are chatters, checks or scoldings but the most distinguishing and beautiful is a two-part call.

If I ever commission someone to create a painting for me, it will have a red-winged blackbird in it. When I see one sitting on a fence post noisily protecting his territory, I know that sound is embedded in what made me and it makes me feel the endlessness of summer even though each summer does end -- and similarly it makes me feel the same way about life.
