It is humbling and probably even healthy to at least know, that I know very little

My mom used to recite these lines about an owl:

A wise old owl lived in an oak
The more he saw the less he spoke
The less he spoke the more he heard
Why can't we all be like that wise old bird?

It seemed silly at the time, but even though somewhat hackneyed, was probably more sensible than I realized.

Study is like the heaven's glorious sun,
That will not be deep-searched with saucy looks;
Small have continual plodders ever won,
Save base authority from others' books.
These earthly godfathers of Heaven's lights
That give a name to every fixed star,
Have no more profit of their shining nights
Than those that walk and wot not what they are
